Production of the FreedMan Chair

More chairs are ready for shipping!

I got back from a mammoth three-week trip in China last weekend and it’s been a busy week getting things at this end sorted out.

Apologies for not updating you sooner, but I’ve been waiting to hear confirmation from the factory on the production and can now confirm that one container left for the UK last week, another for the UK will be loaded this Wednesday. The two containers for the US shipment have been…

The FreedMan Chair – Mark IV

Final production

2 years ago 1

I’ve been busy getting sorted for our trip to China to oversee the final production of your chairs. The first batch of chairs arrive at the UK port on 16th of January (despite the ship crashing-seriously!), will be in customs for 5 days and then will be coming out to the first lucky people 2-4 days after that. So before the end of January.

The next batch should be ready for checking (by myself and Dean, our lead engineer) this Tuesday 13th Jan and hopefully ready for shipping Friday or Monday and will be at their destinations approximately 5 weeks after that.

The first batch is on the boat!

That’s right we have chairs on their way to us in the UK! I know it seems like it’s taken an age (I certainly feel about ten years older…) but it’s a real landmark to finally have some consumer-ready chairs on their way. This is a small batch of 150 and they were sent to the port a week ago. Since then we’ve cleared the decks at our production line, had many discussions over improving production and quality-checking processes, updated work instructions, etc, etc. We are now continuing with the follow-on production.

Almost there…

We’re getting closer… We should receive tomorrow what we hope will be five perfect, consumer-ready chairs. We resolved the pad over-molding issue, but out of the five samples we received two weeks ago two had minor defects that meant they were not as we wanted. Some of the tapped holes had swarf (small bits of aluminium flakes) left in them which made the chairs difficult to assemble and so we had to call in our quality control guy over there and upgrade the assembly and checking processes.

120+ individual parts and 25 molds…

Just to let you know that our first production run is progressing really well and the quality of the chair is just getting better and better.
I wanted to give you an insight of what’s going into this…

There are at least 60 people working on it at the moment. The quality control people walk around brandishing vernier callipers and the guys assembling the components wear white gloves!

It’s looking really good out here. The programme for the next week has been set and we’re on track to bring you your magnificent chairs. Here are some pics I took yesterday of components for the first run that Dean and I are overseeing (Dean arriving on Monday at 6am!). They are being polished over the weekend and we will be working with the production team to get the assembly and quality right.

Production begins!

I just arrived to oversee the production of your chairs.

I’ll be here for 12 days working on every component and every stage of the assembly-they have to be right (yes, I am a touch OCD, didn’t you know?). Geson, our project manager is such a nice guy. His wife is a nurse and they have a 4 year-old daughter. I was thinking I’d bring his daughter something tasteful, wooden etc and the Mrs said…
